Govardhan Puja 2026

Govardhan Puja 2026 falls on in Delhi, India (Udaya Tithi, computed for local sunrise).

Two dating conventions exist for this festival. In years when Pratipada begins in the afternoon, many calendars observe Govardhan Puja on the previous day — the day right after Diwali — following the evening (Sayankala) window used in cities such as Mumbai and in several government calendars. Classical sunrise-tithi dating, followed by this page, then places it a day later. Both readings are long-standing conventions.

Dates are computed for Delhi, India (Udaya Tithi, Smarta convention; Pradosh dated by sunset, Sankashti by moonrise). See about for the full method and the Vaishnava difference on kshaya dates.

About Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja falls on the first day of the bright fortnight after Diwali, and recalls Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill on his little finger to shelter the people and cattle of Braj from Indra's storms.

Devotees build a small hill of cow dung or arrange an annakut — a mountain of food offerings — and share it as prasad. In Gujarat the day is Bestu Varas, the New Year; in much of North India it is observed as Bali Pratipada, welcoming King Bali's annual return.

Methodology and reference

Dates on this page are computed astronomically — sidereal solar and lunar longitudes with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — and dated by the classical rules of Dharmasindhu and Muhurta Chintamani (Udaya Tithi, Pradosh-vyapini and Aparahna conventions as applicable). Every value is regression-checked against Rashtriya Panchang, the official almanac compiled by Positional Astronomy Centre, IMD (Government of India) in Kolkata; the full method is described on the about page.

Frequently asked questions

When is Govardhan Puja in 2026?
Govardhan Puja 2026 falls on Tuesday, 10 November 2026 in Delhi, India (Udaya Tithi, computed for local sunrise).
What is Govardhan Puja?
Govardhan Puja falls on the first day of the bright fortnight after Diwali, and recalls Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill on his little finger to shelter the people and cattle of Braj from Indra's storms.
How is Govardhan Puja observed?
Devotees build a small hill of cow dung or arrange an annakut — a mountain of food offerings — and share it as prasad. In Gujarat the day is Bestu Varas, the New Year; in much of North India it is observed as Bali Pratipada, welcoming King Bali's annual return.
Why might Govardhan Puja fall on a different day elsewhere?
Observance dates follow the tithi current at local sunrise, so cities with different sunrise times can observe a day earlier or later. Vaishnava calendars also shift dates when a tithi touches no sunrise (kshaya).
Why do some calendars show Govardhan Puja on the day right after Diwali?
When Pratipada begins in the afternoon, calendars that follow the evening (Sayankala) window — and several government calendars — observe Govardhan Puja on the day after Diwali. Classical sunrise-tithi dating, followed by this page, places it a day later in such years. Both readings are long-standing conventions; observance follows family and temple tradition.
