About Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima honours spiritual and academic teachers, falling on the full moon of Ashadha. Tradition credits the sage Vyasa — compiler of the Vedas and the Mahabharata — with being born on this day, hence its other name, Vyasa Purnima.
Disciples visit their teachers, offer puja and gifts, and begin new studies, for the day is considered ideal for vidyarambha. Ashrams hold satsang and recitations, and in Buddhist tradition it is also the day the Buddha first taught at Sarnath.
