Abhijit Muhurat: strengths and limits

Abhijit is the only daily window that is auspicious regardless of the weekday’s Choghadiya, because Rahu Kaal never touches the middle of the daylight. Its limits are equally well defined: it is not observed on Wednesday, when tradition invalidates it, and it is not a substitute for a full lagna-based marriage muhurat. Travellers should also note that the window is anchored to local solar noon, so it differs from clock noon wherever the time zone is wide.

Methodology and reference

All timings on this page are computed astronomically for Delhi, India — solar and lunar positions, the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa and sunrise-anchored window divisions — and regression-checked against the Government of India publication Rashtriya Panchang (Positional Astronomy Centre, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata). Data verified against the Positional Astronomy Centre, IMD (Government of India) publications on every site update; the computation method is described on the about page.

Frequently asked questions

What is Abhijit Muhurat?
Abhijit is the eighth and middle muhurat of the fifteen-fold day division: roughly 48 minutes centred on local solar noon. It is considered auspicious for all beginnings because the Sun is at its highest and Rahu Kaal never touches this span.
Why is Abhijit Muhurat not recommended on Wednesday?
Tradition holds that Abhijit is invalid (or greatly weakened) on Wednesday, the day of Mercury, because of a specific conjunction of classical rules recorded in Muhurta texts. Most panchangs exclude it that day, and this page follows the same convention.
Is Abhijit Muhurat good for all activities?
It is a general-purpose favourable window — travel, meetings, purchases and ceremonies alike. It is, however, not used for marriage ceremonies, which require a full lagna-based muhurat rather than a daily window.
