About Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja is dedicated to Surya, the sun god, and his sister Chhathi Maiya, celebrated over four days ending on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika. It is the great festival of Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
Devotees — mostly women — observe a rigorous fast, standing waist-deep in rivers and ponds at dawn and dusk to offer arghya to the rising and setting sun. The rituals are counted among the most austere in the Hindu calendar, and the offerings of thekua, sugarcane and fruit are prepared with scrupulous purity.
