About Rath Yatra
Rath Yatra is the great chariot festival of Lord Jagannath at Puri in Odisha, held on the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha. The deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are pulled in three enormous wooden chariots from the temple to the Gundicha temple, a few kilometres away.
Pulling the chariot ropes with one's own hands is considered a great act of devotion, and the festival draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. Similar processions are now held by ISKCON and regional temples across India and abroad.
