About Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima commemorates Gautama Buddha, and by tradition marks his birth, his enlightenment and his parinirvana — all said to have occurred on the same full-moon day of Vaishakha. It is the holiest day of the Buddhist calendar.
Monasteries hold prayers and sermons, devotees dress in white and offer flowers and candles at stupas and viharas. Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar draw large pilgrimages, and many followers free caged animals as an act of compassion.
