About Durga Puja
Durga Ashtami, the eighth day of Sharad Navratri, is the heart of Durga Puja — the day the goddess is believed to have revealed her fiercest form to destroy the demon Mahishasura.
In Bengal and eastern India, the day opens with the mahasnan and Shodasi Upachar puja, followed by the sandhi puja at the juncture with Navami. Pushpanjali offerings are made in the morning, devotees dress in new clothes for pandal visits, and young girls are worshipped as the goddess herself in the kumari puja.
