About Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third lunar day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. The word akshaya means ’never diminishing’, and the day is regarded as one of the most auspicious in the year — any venture begun on it is believed to prosper.
It is the single most popular day of the year for buying gold, and jewellers across India see their heaviest footfall. Devotees perform puja to Vishnu and Lakshmi, offer donations of rice, salt and clothing, and in Odisha and Bengal the day is tied to the beginning of the famous Rath Yatra construction at Puri.
